National Youth Leadership Training

During the Fall, BSA National updated its policy requiring that NYLT courses must now operate under the linked Troop model with same-gender youth staff and participants. While we actively seek girls who had completed NYLT to staff our 2022 Course, all potential staff candidates have declined – both within and outside Monmouth. Therefore, not being able to provide the required, qualified female staff, results in us not being able to conduct an NYLT course for female participants this year – further limiting the pool of future staff candidates. We certainly want to transform this potentially vicious cycle into one where our girls can develop their leadership skills. We have provided a list of nearby Council’s NYLT courses and their dates for eligible girls to continue their leadership training and potentially become future Monmouth Council NYLT staff members.

National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

For many years, junior leader training (JLT) was an important part of the leadership training continuum of BSA local councils throughout America. A task force of leadership experts and hundreds of Scouts in pilot courses across the nation reviewed and tested every aspect of the current NYLT syllabus, which incorporates the latest leadership ideas and presents fresh, vital, and meaningful training for today’s Scouts.

The BSA updated its policy during the Fall of 2021, requiring that NYLT courses must operate using the linked Troop model with same-gender youth staff and participants. To comply with that requirement, we are actively seeking female youth who have completed NYLT to serve on the staff of our 2024 Course. Unfortunately, not many of these youth members in the MCBSA are currently in that category.

In the unfortunate event that the dates of our NYLT course are not compatible with your calendar, then a list of the available NYLT courses, with registration information, is provided here: 2024 Nearby NYLT Courses. All ScoutsBSA members in the MCBSA deserve the opportunity to develop their leadership skills. Please contact us with any questions or concerns.
